Infinite Minutae

Back to Writing

And the sun sets
Azure skies unfold their far-off panorama
Clouds skim in the breeze. Do they hold the water
That the dinosaurs drank? That early man felt,
Dripping on his back?
Or are those molecules at the bottom of some distant ocean?

The moon, just a pale orb before dusk
Sits there, untouchable
Her patchwork face gazes back down on me.
As it has been, for untold millennia

See a world in a grain of sand?
Words spoke truly, for that is all that we are.
The infinite universe spreads out, unexplored, and silent.

And we?
Mere mortals, content with our paths in life.
Transient beings, our existence
But a flicker.
A brief second of experience
Before we are extinguished.
As a flame.

We hurry, in a rush to be somewhere different.
Filled with a sense of our own mortality.
And yet,
Not.
Our belief in mankind, in steel and stone,
As a childs sense of his own immortality.
But then,
We are children.
Lost in a game, far beyond our comprehension.
